Hey guys/gals, I am at the Wal-Mart stomping grounds (unfortunately) and for a few months now, I have been researching and debating whether or not to get an at home filtration system, and finally make the switch from the bottled-water plague (ewe, that sounded gross) and be free of my 1-cent per ounce chains (which I know sounds cheap, bit it ADDS up!) So, does anyone here use or would advocate switching to a filtration system, probably the variety that hooks right onto the faucet? I can absolutely tell the difference in taste between tap and bottled that was treated by distillation and reverse osmosis... Anyway, any tips would be appreciated... since I drink 2g per day and my wife drinks another gallon, and having 2 people for the first time in our household preparing for a show means pounds of meat is also being consumed... cutting corners somewhere will help! Thanks.

I use a Brita filter that attaches to the faucet. Postives: Easy, relatively inexpensive (~$14 per filter), indicator light tells when filter needs to be changed. Negatives: As the filter is used for a little while (~2 weeks) it slows down significantly. It takes about 10 minutes to fill up a gallon jug.
I am not sure how many gallons each filter will deliver. I estimate I change it about every 4 - 6 weeks and I use 1 gallon per day.

The water tastes just fine to me. No after taste at all.

I have a Brita water pitcher and it works great. Have used it for a few years now.

I use the Brita filter on the faucet as well. But I don't have the slow fillup situation that pgolden has. I love it. The only damn problem is that they don't have something for the ice maker!

I have been in the filtration aisle before, but I end up staring at all the choices and all the varying claims of $400 savings over bottle water per year, and end up getting so confused I just leave, lol. They have flavor options now, which adds a fruity flavor like crystal light, to your water as it comes out. Kind of a pricey gimmick though in my opinion, I just want some good clean filtered water that doesn't cost an arm or a leg. Thanks for all the input... don't think I'll have time to go to the store today, I'm stopping by Sam's Club once again though, I went through the last 40lb of chicken in THREE weeks, and that was mixed with another 40lbs of Steak and Pork Loin, not to mention egg whites and whey powder!

I bought a Brita Ultramax container. I absolutely love it! I too can tell a difference between bottle and tap water...but with this, it tastes the same as bottled water. No problems what so ever. I'd have to replace my kitchen faucet to get the faucet filtration and I already had a space in my fridge because I was buying the 2gal. rectangular jug from the grocery store. I think it's a good buy!

THANKS A LOT for chiming in, I'll look for that specific name and brand. Why do they call it "max?"

My wife didn't a filter system on our faucet, plus the current one won't take one...I'd have to change it out. I believe they call it the "max" because it is the largest one they make. Usually runs about $40, but I got mine on sale at Target for $29.99. Here's a link to the Brita website on it: www.brita.com/products/water-dispensers/ultramax/

I don't know what I'm going to use as far as to carry the water around, I'm used to packing the water bottles, maybe I can get an empty gallon container somewhere. I have to take my meals to work in a hiking insulated back-pack, it's so heavy!

No problem, Aaron...glad I could help. I hear ya on the packing...my co-workers always give me a hard time because I carry a large lunch box and I keep a mini-fridge in my office. I bought some Eddie Bauer water bottles from Target that I fill up as well, but I also talked my boss into getting our office a Zephyrhills water cooler...told him we needed it since we live in a hurricane state in case of emergencies ...and he bought it!! So that helps out tremendously.
