I got an email today about an upcoming NPC competition and in said email it mentioned something about a new men's category - Men's Physique. It judges "proper shape and symmetry combined with muscularity and overall condition", but "extreme muscularity should be marked down." A competitor is supposed to wear board shorts, too. WTF?!?!?!?! SERIOUSLY?! I don't know where to even begin with this one. On the one hand, I guess it gives more guys an opportunity to compete. But my issue is how in the hell is the judging going to go with THIS category. Did the NPC see how great their judging was and decide, "you know what, our job isn't hard enough...let's add another categoy that will make the judging 100x harder". I guess since we now have figure AND bikini, it was only fair to the guys to add a completely insane category that won't be judged correctly either. Check out the rules... www.npcnewsonline.com/rules_men.cfmWhat does you all think?

I completely agree. When bikini came out I was like, HUH? It's ridiculous. The NPC will soon have a drag queen contest to boot. Who's the sexiest drag queen (don't get me wrong I love my queens but seriously, it's where it's headed). No extreme effort, pain, sacrifice, blood sweat and tears is going to go into these new categories. Men's "physique" is gonna be guys who don't know REAL pain, and I think bikini is completely chauvinist and gratuitous. Who's got the biggest boobs and the best tan and the best hair extensions, that's bikini for ya. That's not SPORT that's just Playboy. And now, we have the "Chippendales" parading across the stage LOL. I can hear the cheesy strip club music already.

It's probably because there is a decline in people wanting to be bodybuilders and more so have surfer bodies. Let's face it, under 20% of our population is into serious training and 1% of that actually get's on stage.
*note* these are not actual statistics but probably darn close, lol

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Its all about the MONEY. Look how how many Bikini contestants you get in an avg show now a days? The cost to enter is between $50-$75 for a local show and $100+ for a National show that is some big bucks to the promoter. Furthermore, when you tell a sponsor you will have 150 competitors he has to figure his ROI based on the friends and family and general pop that will support those in the contest. However, Double that number to 300 with a bikini division and a new physique division the number of contestants makes the potential ROI much more pleasing. Now, with all of that being said I ask you to look behind the curtain ( as in OZ) and see who is making the calls on this; Manion. The guy is trying to hold on to a niche sport by bringing in more main stream "talent" in order to survive.

Money makes the world go round, etc. It's really too bad though, I feel like it's just sacrilege. There's nothing special about being able to compete in a bikini or board shorts, any joe blow can be a cardio bunny and lift a little here and there and watch their calories a bit more. Sad.

I totally agree with you as to the "why" this category was put in place, but my main thought was on the judging and HOW that's going to work. If you thought BBing was subjective...good luck! Also, regarding the ROI of a contest, there is such a thing as diminshing returns! Contests are extremely long for the competitor, their loving (and suffering) families who sit there the entire time, & the casual fan who doesn't necessarily want to sit there for hours on end. Unless they make this a 2- to 3-day event, I can't even imagine what it's going to be like to add yet another category into the already long ass day!

I disagree with you that "anyone" can be cardio bunny or just lift a little here and there. My room mate competes in Bikini and I see first hand the discipline it takes to maintain a pleasing figure without over doing it. She trains every day and must work hard to maintain "proportion". She trains just as hard at the dinner table as any body builder making sure she isnt going to eat to be to lean which may make her look too muscular. If it was easy to have a bikini body then everyone would have one. Same thing goes for the guys. I personally would love to look like a "surfer dude" with deep abs and a scuplted chest. However, I have a Endomorph/Mesomorph body type. It is very easy for me to put on muscle but hard to stay lean. So I applaud the surfer boy look of being lean and ripped. I for one have no reason to be a bodybuilder nor do I aspire to be one. I dont exactly think the new category is good for the contest but I do say to each his own when it comes to competition. There are plenty who dont "GET" bobybuilding or Figure competitors, but that doesnt mean the competitors are wrong for wanting to be one.

I've DONE bikini competitions when I was a model. It was basically the same thing as what's being shown in the NPC. And compared to what I'm doing now? Swallowing my vomit after a lift in the gym? Doing bikini comps was a walk in the park. I grew up watching my sister and cousin drain pus from their big toes after being en pointe for 4 hours a day as pro ballerinas. I've got the DNA of an Olympian in my blood. Think what you will, but from personal experience, it's ridiculous what the NPC is doing it's just for flash factor.

By the way, see the world. This is America. Most people on the beaches are overweight. But go to Brazil, the men and women on the beaches there all look like bikini and physique competitors. Or go to the French Riviera. Or even Miami Beach. Thousands upon thousands of what the NPC would consider male physique and female bikini competitors. Or Portofino in Italy. Lord, Cannes is another place. The beaches in Israel are FULL of sexy bods. Avec un effort minimal! Leur regime' alimentaire et la sante' globale de'passere notre par mille pour cent! Et ils le font sans effort!

LOL you said it perfectly! It's so true, the thing with beaches that are NOT American (we're a nation of lazy fat asses so you see some um, not so pretty people around these parts) but in foreign countries their lifestyles are SOOOO much different than ours, their diet, their activity, that they get these hot bods very easily, with hardly any sacrifice or "training". They are merely a product of their culture and surroundings. And what's with the guys wearing board shorts? Is this an Ambercrombie and Fitch competition? The guys won't have to train legs then cuz it will cover up their hams and quads. They will be able to get away with just training upper body.
