Hi everybody,
My stats;
Age: 25
Weight 185lbs
Height 5'11
Body fat 18-20%
Training experience: 7 years (on and off, so probably more like 4-5)
Why, after 7 years do I have virtually nothing to show for it ? A few reasons....
#1 - I have taken some extended (close to a year) lay offs from the gym either due to injury or being busy with life as a full time student
#2 - I have been fighting a battle of the bulge, my fat percentage has been an issue my whole life.
I have done P/RR/S several times in the past and honestly can say that I love it. But I can also honestly say I have tried MANY other types of workouts as well.
Examples; starter strength by Rippetoe, HST, 5x5, and 1rm training.
All have given me results, but unfortunately strength training with such high weights usually leads me to a low back injury.
I have been dealing with low back pain for about 5+ years and usually when I get my strength and muscle back up to a decent size, I end up injuring myself by pressing too hard for a new PR.
Anyways, after my most recent 1 year lay off, I have been back training for about 1.5 months and hope I can get back to where I was before my injury.
I know I have muscle memory on my side, does anybody know how long I can benefit from the muscle memory until my gains slow?
I also have a predicament in that, at my weight, I want to be leaner, but I also want more muscle. So I realize that while I am returning from my lay off, I can expect a short lived (gain muscle and lose fat at the same time) advantage, it won't last forever so I need to pick one to focus on more.
What do you guys suggest that I focus on more? Muscle gain or fat loss?
My diet is in check, guaranteed. I am certified in nutrition and my diet is spot on, it's just my training that needs tweaking and I am open to your guidance.
Thanks
EDIT: Oh, and if you are going to be giving me advice, and you happen to use steroids, please don't give me any advice. Because your knowledge and experience will not apply to me as a natural bodybuilder. I can say that will the utmost confidence, because I have been listening to and training with steroid lifters for years and I have observed first hand that their experience and knowledge only works for them because of the drugs they use and it is a completely different ball game. You can argue all you want, but there is no way you could ever convince me that training the same way that you do will give me the gains I am looking for.
Thanks again,.
