Does anyone have a suggestion for a "midnight" snack? I typically eat a cup of cottage cheese between 9 - 10 at night before I go to bed. It seems as if I usually wake up hungry about 2 a.m. I am not currently cutting for a contest but trying to bulk up while maintaing reasonable levels of body fat. Occaisionally I have a few almonds or a sthingyful of natural peanut butter. Is this okay or is something else better? Thanks for any suggestions.

I like the idea of nat peanut butter with a little bit of protein powder. I'd love to do that for myself, but if I did that, I'd wake myself up too much...and then too many times getting up to pee. lol

If you do take in late night carbs, would it be better for them to be slower digesting carbs, to keep the anabolism going all night? The one good thing about it is, I believe, the protein source is casein, which is a slow digesting protein. I'd like to hear some input on this, too because of those reasons I'm always kind of torn whether skim milk is good pre bed.

Skim milk and cottage cheese are different primarily in their sugar content. Per g/protein, skim milk has many more grams of sugar per serving. I think that you are much better off using cottage cheese at this time when compared to skim milk.

Couple of things I'd like to interject:
1) I agree with Ramiro - I think your best bet at this time is a shake of soem sort and either almonds, nat pb (or other nut butter) or simply EVOO or Fish Oil.
2) I don't like the idea of carbs before bed in any form (other than maybe some incidentals from like a fat source ie almonds, nut butter or maybe even a bit from a condiment if you're off season) that is not fibrous veggies (broccoli/asparagus/green beans). WHAT'S the point? You're not using any form of glycogen while you sleep and any circulating blood sugar will be stored as predominantly fat. If your nutrition throughout the day is right, your glycogen stores will be plenty full by this point - UNLESS YOUR LAST MEAL IS IMMEDIATELY POST WORKOUT...then carbs are essential.
I like the idea of eating if you wake up while bulking, however I'm with Ramiro. I drink a lot of water at all times so I'm up 1-2 times/night anyway. I'll make a shake with some oil in it (20-25 grams whey + 1/2 tbsp EVOO) and keep it in the fridge in case I wake up in the off season. I dont' do this all the time because if I don't wake up, it's wasted.
While prepping, recently, I've been waking up A LOT and not sleeping well. at times I'm STARVING and have a hard time going back to bed. at these times I've mixed up 5-7 grams of bcaa with water and drank it. Seems to help and I know it keeps me anti-catabolic.

I always make a small protein shake before going to bed that I keep in the bathroom, so that when I get up in the middle of the night to use the facilities it is right there for me to drink down without missing a beat.
I have been doing this for the last 10 years!

I have been doing this for the last 10 years! I just did this for the first time last night, and sure enough I got up to pee and I slammed that sucker. Question, though...which day's macros do you count those into?

I usually go with a few sticks of light string cheese and a protein shake. Each string cheese stick is 2.5g fat and 8g protein.
