i just read an interesting thread about elbow position and it got me wondering about everyone's views on hand position. i personally feel comfortable with my forearms perpendicular to to floor at the bottom of the movement. i do close grip benches for triceps with my hands 12-18 inches apart. i've read sergio oliva sometimes benched with his hands as wide as he could get them....and who could argue with that chest?

Actually, I've realized that for flat presses I have to concentrate on keeping my elbows forward just a bit in order to make the chest do all the work.

You can't argue with Sergio's chest, however, for most I do not think that wide a hand spacing is best. Just beyond shoulder width apart allows for an excellent stretch and contraction of the chest without over-stretching the shoulder joint. That said, everyone must find what works best for themselves.

thanks for the response. i personally find that my hand spacing will vary according to my elbow placement, as i try to keep my forearms perpendicular to the floor. so the wider my elbows are flared, the wider my hands are. that's what works best for me.
